EcuTek FAQ

1.Q: I do not see any hardware, why am I paying $1700 ?

Ans : You are paying for the technology and brilliance of the people at EcuTek UK to reverse engineered the Subaru ECU. Hence, the low price you pay for a full Engine Management System.

In other words, if EcuTek will to design a separate standalone ECU, the cost would not be $1700 taking into consideration of the cost to produce a circuit board with full-on functionalities of a 32bit computer.

2.Q: Does EcuTek have any resale value?

Ans : Yes!! As the license is attached to the ECU that is flashed. All you have to do is to find a buyer with the same “my” year of your car and swap ECU.

BMS will recognize the “flashed” ECU and will only charge for tuning fee. Prices range from $100 – $130 per hour.

At time of exchanging ECU, I will “teach” the immobilizer chip to recognize the swapped ECU. - free

3.Q: I heard that resetting the battery will erase some of my learnt engine variables?

Ans : The answer is YES and NO. The only map that can’t be mapped at time of tuning is the “ Fine Ignition Learning Map “

Fine Ignition Learning Map comprises of a table of 8x8 table totaling 64 values. This allows the ECU to tailor the timing in 64 separate areas of load and rpm.

Over time, your car may have such “learnt” values in your Fine Ignition Learning Map that look like this

After an ECU reset, it will look like this

I have answered the “Yes” part so read on to find out why it’s “No” from here on.

This Fine Learning function is to protect the car in the event that a low RON fuel was used. The knock sensor will detect traces of knock and start to retard ignition timing to safe guard the car from detonation.

If the nothing has changed prior to the ECU reset, then the ignition timing values will re-learnt in no time. This is so because the knock sensor goes to work the moment you power up your car!

The “Base Ignition Map” that is changed during tuning WILL NOT be erased.

“Flashing” means erasing all data on the EPROM chip first before re-loading the tuned map into it. So there is no “previous” data the now-flashed ECU can go back to.

4. Q: I have imported a MY05 STI Spec C, is it supported by EcuTek?

Ans : Yes! Most models from 2002 to current are supported. EcuTek is continually researching and expanding the list of vehicles that the software is able to program. If you can't see your vehicle on the list, don't despair. EcuTek is continually adding to the list. Send us an email and let us know your cars make, model details etc.

The current supported models are :-

- WRX and JDM WRX 2002-2006

- STI, JDM STI and STI Spec C 2002-2006

- Forester 2002 onwards and the latest "Fly-by-wire" models

- Legacy B4 and Legacy GT

- Latest CAN bus ECUs my08 WRX, S-GT, STI
